Ohio is the fourth largest of the 12 states that produce maple sugar. More than 900 Ohio families produce nearly 100,000 gallons of syrup each year, but the demand far exceeds the supply. In addition, the state hosts a variety of maple sugar events around the sugaring season, which lasts from early February to mid-March. Maple syrup produced in Northern Ohio has a different flavor than syrup produced in Southern Ohio. Each year Ohio is ranked 4th or 5th in production. The maple industry contributes $5 million to the state’s economy each year. In 1840 Ohio was the largest maple producing state, as recorded by the U.S. Agricultural Census.
More fun facts…Ohio’s maple syrup is a “Super Food” that has many health benefits naturally provided by antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.
The Lifesaver was originally sweetened with maple sugar created in Garrettsville.
Native Americans are widely recognized as the first to discover the sweet stuff dripping from broken branches of cuts in the bark. The sweet sap was boiled down in hollowed out logs by placing hot rocks into the sugary solution. Sap runs best when the days start to warm, but the nights are cold.
