The City of Covington and the Wastewater department have implemented a sewer lateral repair program for its residents. This program reimburses the homeowner for repair costs that are incurred for cleaning and maintenance of a defective lateral. Due to limited funding, the city will prioritize projects based on the impact to public health and safety rather than on a first-come, first-serve basis. If a home, or other building, is experiencing blockages or sewer backups, or if sewage is overflowing into the environment, your private lateral may be defective. Sinkholes can also be a sign of defective laterals. A plumber can assess the condition of the pipeline before needed repairs are scheduled. It may be necessary to clear roots, grease, debris or other blockages in the lateral all the way to the connection with the sewer main. This may also require the installation of a cleanout. A cleanout is a vertical pipe from an underground lateral to the ground’s surface and is installed for maintenance access. Remove any prohibited storm water connections to the sanitary sewer system. Improper connections include roof downspouts, groundwater sump pumps, foundation drains and drains from window wells, driveways, etc. This extra water may overload the sanitary sewer system and cause sewage overflows or basement backups. You may also consider that most insurance companies offer optional backup coverage on homeowner policies to protect your home in the case of such an occurrence.
